Hazardous Waste

There are ways you can protect your family's health and the environment: Avoid products marked 'danger'. Look for this word on the labels of cleaners, polishes, paint strippers and pesticides. 'Danger' means the product could poison you, cause serious damage to your skin or eyes, or easily cause a fire. Products marked 'caution' or 'warning' are safer, but the best choice of all is a product that doesn't require any warning at all. Dispose of leftover Household Hazardous Waste safely. When you dispose of chemicals in the storm drain or sink, the chemicals can end up in local water bodies or groundwater. If you throw them in the garbage, the chemicals can endanger collection and disposal workers. 

Many household products contain hazardous chemicals that can, if not properly disposed of, pollute water, harm wildlife and threaten your drinking water and well-being.

Recycle your used motor oil, anti-freeze, household batteries and aerosol cans. These can all be placed out for curbside pick-up on your regular recycling pick-up day.

Proper Disposal of Household Hazardous Waste

Some Household Hazardous Waste is collected at curbside along with recycle materials.

Empty aerosol cans:
Remove and discard plastic caps.

Motor oil/antifreeze:
Place in an empty milk jug with a tight fitting cap. Do not mix oil and antifreeze together or with any other material.

Household batteries:
Put in re-sealable, clear plastic bag. Include flashlight, hearing aid and rechargeable batteries (alkaline, nickel cadium and lithium). Do not set out vehicle batteries; they may be taken to a HHW collection site as listed below.

Residents may take household hazardous waste to any of the Thurston County collection facilities Please bring the material in the original container. There is no charge for the hazard waste brought to these sites. There is, however, a 5 gallon container restriction with a 25-gallon limit.
