Volunteers Needed

McLane Black Lake FD prides itself in providing mission-focused, high-quality services to our community. This is only accomplished through the combined effort of our most valued resource – our dedicated personnel. The Fire District is a combination department made up of both Career (full-time) and Volunteer Firefighters. Both are necessary to make our programs a success.

Volunteer Fire Academy

To be a volunteer for the Fire District is a unique opportunity. Not only is it away to give back to our community through service, but it also provides recruits experience and training that is valuable in all parts of life. Volunteers, much like career firefighters, complete the same types of training and learn the same skills. Fire District volunteers receive stipends and benefits for their service. The stipend program reimburses members quarterly based on points earned through activities. Volunteers are also eligible for retirement and disability coverage, as well as additional insurance for accidental injuries or death both on and off duty.

REQUIREMENTS FOR VOLUNTEERS
To become a volunteer, individuals must meet certain requirements, which include:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Possessing a valid driver’s license
  • Passing a background check and medical examination
  • Pass a physical agility test (CPAT)
  • Completing required training courses
  • Demonstrating a commitment to serving the community

Volunteer Firefighter Academy

The Thurston County Fire Training Academy (TCFTA) equips recruits with essential knowledge and skills for safe and effective fireground operations. The program is IFSAC-accredited and meets the standards of the Washington State Firefighter I Training Program. The program runs for four months, with classes held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and practical skills sessions on Saturdays.

What is the Purpose of the Academy?

The academy prepares students through classroom instruction and hands-on drills covering core fire service topics, including:

  • Fire behavior and suppression
  • Water supply and ventilation
  • Search and rescue
  • Overhaul, salvage, and evidence protection

Recruits also receive training in the use of firefighting tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Frequently Asked Questions

No. As a volunteer you are donating your time to the community.  As an incentive however, you will receive reimbursement for the calls and drills you attend and per diem for the time you spend on shift.

What night will I be required to drill?

Most training can occur while you are on your regularly scheduled shift.  Additional training may be provided to assure all members have multiple opportunities to complete training requirements.

After initial training, how much time will I spend at the fire department?

You will be asked for 36 hours of participation a month.  In addition, all annual and quarterly training requirements must be fulfilled.

What will I have to pay for or provide if I volunteer?

The only thing you will need to provide are your personal leather safety boots.  The district will provide everything else.

Can I volunteer if I work nights?

Yes, we have flexibility to adapt to a variety of schedules.

How will I know when I'm needed and where to go?

Most people receive response information to their cell phone via Active911.

Who provides insurance coverage while I'm on duty?

Washington State Board of Volunteer Firefighters provides all insurance coverage for volunteers while they are training, responding or participating in any district sponsored activity.  This insurance coverage includes limited reimbursement for loss of pay and a line of duty death benefit.
